While Black Horse Garage has been in business for 20 years, it can be said that the foundation was laid back in 1958 when Frank Buonanno rebuilt the engine on his father's Ferrari 212 Inter. From that point on, his life has been linked to both Ferrari restoration, and Ferrari maintenance.
His professional experience includes working with Modena Sports Cars of NYC, acting as representative for Lamborghini and working at the Collection in Miami. He has personally rebuilt more than 100 Ferrari V12s, and since 1990, has been the driving force behind Black Horse Garage where he's restored countless Ferraris (including a 250GTE which won the Coppa Bella Macchina twice).

Frank and his team at Black Horse work closely with Ferraristi and other enthusiasts to maintain these fabulous sports cars to the highest level. At any given time, you'll find a full-range of Ferraris undergoing maintenance in our 40,000 square-foot facility. From 250s to 275s, Daytonas to Testarossas, we are the trusted source for Ferrari maintenance, Ferrari restoration, coachwork, sales and parts in the New York metropolitan area.
Where did the black horse come from?
The Cavallino Rampante, as the black horse is known, pictured in the Ferrari logo was originally found painted on the side of the Italian World War I ace Count Francesco Baracca. He was a national hero and the prancing horse motif from his plane's fuselage was well known. The legend has it that in 1923 after winning a race in Ravenna, Enzo Ferrari met Francesco's mother who suggested he use the black cavollino rampante as his symbol, as it would surely bring him luck. Mr. Ferrari did just that, but laid the horse over a field of yellow in honor of his hometown, Modena.
The Cavallino Rampante and Black Horse Garage
Many people when visiting our shop ask if we've named Black Horse Garage after Ferrari's prancing horse. It's easy to understand why, given Frank Buonanno's history with the marque, plus the magnitude of Ferraris in the shop and the related memorabilia that adorns our walls. But the truth is, this is just a fortunate coincidence.
Frank decided to call his shop Black Horse after reading Robert Bly's best-selling Iron John in which the black horse represents a point in life or career where one comes to rely on self-confidence and eliminates self-doubt
